If your chromebook's camera is not working properly, please try the following steps
- Hard resetting your chromebook
- Try the camera in a different application
- Check the webcame privacy switch
Hard resetting your chromebook
Often, a hard reset on your chromebook will resolve this issue. A hard reset is a way to clear out any corrupted memory and will not harm your Chromebook. Please try the following steps:
Push and hold the Power + Refresh buttons for 10 seconds. Once 10 seconds has passed, you can let go of both buttons, and turn the chromebook on again.
Try the camera in a different application
If your camera is not working in a particular application, it is possible that it is an issue with that app, and not the camera itself. To confirm this, try the following steps:
- Open the Camera app by clicking on the Apps icon in Chrome and choosing Camera.
- Once the camera app launches, you should be able to see yourself and the green light next to the camera come on. If you do not, get in touch with the support team through one of the channels outlined in the "How do I get technical support?" article.
- If your camera does work as normal, and you are trying to use your camera within a website in chrome, try clearing your cache and cookies. If this does not help, please reach out to tech support.
Check the webcam privacy slider
If you are seeing a black screen when using your webcam, and are on the newer PX141E model Chromebook, try looking for a privacy slider cover next to your webcam at the top of your screen. The newer Chromebooks may have the slider closed on arrival. You can use your thumb to gently push/slide the plastic slider to the left to reveal the camera.
