Your chromebook can be set up to show different languages both in the settings menu and where it's available on the internet. This is great if there's a language that you're learning, one that you speak more often at home, or just one that you're more comfortable with. We'll go over the different places to update the language settings here for your device and the internet, when available.
Changing the language settings for the internet
To add or remove a preferred language to display the internet in, you can follow along with the steps below. Please note, this might not always be available and requires that website to offer the option.
- At the bottom right of your chromebook screen, click on the clock.
- Click the gear to open Settings and choose "Advanced" on the left side of the settings screen.
- Select "Language and Inputs" and choose "Add Languages" in the "Web Content Languages"section.
- Type in the name of the language you'd like to add.
- To show web content in this language when it’s available, click the 3 dots to the right of the language, and select "Move to the top." Your translations will appear in order of preference.
- To remove a language from your preferred list, click the 3 dots to the right of the language and select "Remove."
- To make a prompt to translate pages appear in Chrome, click the 3 dots to the right of the language, and select "Offer to translate pages in this language." This option appears only if you’ve turned on Translation suggestion below the "Web Content Languages" section.
If a page doesn't immediately offer the language of your choice, you should see a Google Translate icon in the top right corner of the search bar. If you click on this, you should be able to toggle between the languages you allowed to offer to translate pages. Please note, this will only work with text -- images with text will stay in the language they were written in.
Changing the language settings on your chromebook
To change the language for the settings menu and other menus on your chromebook, follow along below:
- At the bottom right of your chromebook screen, click on the clock.
- Click the gear to open Settings and choose "Advanced" on the left side of the settings screen.
- Select "Language and Inputs" and choose "Change" for the "Device Language."
- Select the language that you'd like to change to and restart your chromebook.
